I can no longer recognize faces reliably, including my husband’s

Dear Delyara, A brain injury has left me with severe difficulty recognizing faces. I know people by voice, hair, clothing, movement. My husband wears the same red cap in crowded places so I can find him. Yesterday, he took it off in a supermarket because he was hot. I walked past him twice. On the third pass, he said my name. I burst into tears beside the frozen food. He hugged me and said it was okay. It is not okay. I know his face intellectually. I can describe his beard, brown eyes, scar near the eyebrow. Looking directly at him does not reliably produce the feeling of recognition my brain used to give automatically. Sometimes photographs of my own children feel like images of strangers until context tells me otherwise. People say love is more than a face. Of course it is. But faces were one of the ways love announced itself before words. I miss the instant warmth of seeing my husband enter a room and knowing him before he speaks.
