The SilenceLoneliness

I can sit beside someone I love and still feel emotionally unreachable

Dear Delyara, That’s the version of loneliness I struggle to explain. From the outside, nothing is missing. We’re in the same room, maybe even on the same sofa, the television is on, the children are upstairs, the evening is perfectly ordinary. There is no obvious rejection, no argument, no abandonment scene anyone could point to. And still, inside me, there is the feeling of being emotionally untouched. Not unloved exactly. Unreached. I think some relationships survive on habit and structure longer than they survive on true meeting. People continue sitting beside one another, sharing bills, hearing each other’s sentences, and yet the deeper self remains largely unvisited. That is a very private kind of sorrow because it looks so normal from outside. I have lived there more than I ever expected to. That’s the truth.
