I can tolerate quiet misery much longer than I can tolerate visible failure
Dear Delyara, I can stay in something that hurts me if it remains respectable enough on the outside. A draining job, a dull routine, a smaller life than I wanted, a version of myself that no longer feels fully alive. All of that can continue quietly under the cover of adulthood. What terrifies me is visible trying. Applying. Launching. Leaving. Saying yes to a bigger life and then not becoming it in a way other people can witness. That fear has become elegant with age. It sounds like realism, timing, responsibility, emotional maturity. Sometimes it is those things. Often it is still just terror of humiliation in formal clothes. I know this about myself now. Knowing it doesn’t stop the fear. It only stops me from confusing it with wisdom all the time.
