I cannot afford to move out of the apartment where my marriage ended
Dear Delyara, My wife moved out six months ago. I cannot afford another apartment, and the rent here is stabilized, so I am staying in the place we chose together. Financially, it is the sensible decision. Emotionally, every room still has her shape. She chose the yellow kitchen tiles. Her side of the closet is empty. The bedroom window sticks because she once painted it badly. Friends tell me to redecorate. Paint costs money. New furniture costs money. Mostly I need somewhere to live, not a symbolic renovation. Last night, I ate dinner at the table where she told me she wanted a divorce. Same chair. Same scratch near my plate. I hate that the cheapest option is remaining inside the architecture of the marriage. If I earned more, I would move tomorrow. Instead, rent control has made grief financially efficient. The city thinks I am lucky to have this apartment. I know I am. I also sometimes sit in the hallway and wonder how expensive a clean emotional address has become.
