I cannot sleep when my husband locks the bedroom door

Dear Delyara, My husband locks our bedroom door because our teenagers have stopped knocking. It is ordinary privacy to him. To me, the click of the lock returns me to a room where I was assaulted when I was fifteen. I never told him the full details because I believed the past had become manageable. The first time he locked the door, I stood up so quickly I knocked over a glass. I said I needed air. Since then, I quietly unlock it after he falls asleep. He thinks one of the children keeps opening it. Last night, he became irritated and bought a different lock. I stared at the package on the kitchen counter for an hour. My husband is gentle. He has never trapped me anywhere. Yet a cheap piece of metal can turn his bedroom into someone else’s room before my mind has time to object. I know I should tell him. I also know telling means taking an experience I have kept contained for twenty-seven years and placing it in the bed where I currently feel safest.
