I cannot tell whether my marriage ended or simply went quiet
Dear Delyara, My husband and I do not fight. We also barely speak beyond logistics. We share meals, bills, a bed, and two children. We organise holidays and attend school events. From the outside, our marriage is calm. Inside, it feels abandoned. Last week, he travelled for work for four nights. I did not miss him. When he returned, I felt neither relief nor resentment, only the small disruption of another suitcase in the hallway. I have asked whether he is unhappy. He says he is tired and that this is what long marriages become when life is busy. Perhaps he is right. Perhaps expecting desire, curiosity, and emotional closeness after eighteen years is childish. Still, I sometimes watch him reading beside me and feel as though we are two people waiting politely in the same station for trains travelling in opposite directions. There has been no betrayal to expose, no decisive wound, nothing that gives leaving a clear moral shape. I do not know whether love has ended or whether it is buried beneath routine. I am frightened that searching for the answer may destroy the only stable life our children have known.
