My Diary

I changed the bedsheets and felt calmer than I had all week

Dear Delyara, The money was still the money. The school thing was still the school thing. The work thing was still waiting. The body was still tired. And yet, pulling clean sheets across the bed gave me a kind of relief I hadn’t been able to reach through any bigger, more sensible method. The cool fabric, the clean smell, the way the room suddenly felt less argued with — it all reached me. I think this is what I’m learning more and more. Sometimes a woman does not need a life transformation by Tuesday. Sometimes she needs one clean bed in a room that no longer feels like it is also asking something from her. That bed felt like mercy. I climbed into it later and nearly cried from how safe it felt compared with the rest of the week.
