My Diary

I checked the weather three times because I no longer trust any day

Dear Delyara, The rain itself wasn’t the point. The contingency was. Umbrella or no umbrella. Wet shoes or dry shoes. PE outside or inside. Coat or no coat. One more small way the day could go wrong if I got the forecast wrong, one more small thing that would somehow end up in my emotional inbox if it did. I am tired of how much of motherhood feels like low-level risk management. You begin to think you’re just being organised, and maybe you are. But somewhere underneath it, the body is still learning to live as if every small preventable discomfort might matter more than it should because your margin is already too thin to absorb one more thing kindly. That’s what I felt when I checked the weather the third time. Not caution. Strain.
