I corrected the interviewer when he called me “just a carer”

Dear Delyara, I worked as a care assistant for thirteen years while raising children and completing qualifications part-time. During an interview for a senior role, the interviewer said, “You’ve been just a carer until now, so management would be quite a jump.” The old version of me would have laughed politely and tried harder to prove I was grateful for the opportunity. Instead, I said, “I have been a care assistant, not ‘just’ one. I have managed medication emergencies, safeguarding concerns, distressed families, end-of-life care, and teams on understaffed shifts. Management is a different responsibility, not the first serious responsibility I’ve had.” The room became quiet. I thought I had ruined the interview. I got the job. Even if I had not, I would still be glad I answered. Self-esteem was not believing I deserved every promotion. It was refusing to help someone reduce thirteen years of difficult work simply because the title was familiar.
