My Diary

I delivered flowers to the woman replacing me

Dear Delyara, I work for a flower delivery service, and today I delivered an anniversary bouquet to my ex-husband’s apartment. I recognized the address before I read his name. The card said, “Two years with you, and I still can’t believe my luck.” He and I were married for fourteen years. We have been divorced for three. I considered telling my dispatcher the order was damaged, but the arrangement was perfect: white roses, eucalyptus, and the same blue delphiniums I carried at our wedding. A young woman opened the door wearing socks and one of his old college shirts. She thanked me, called into the apartment that the flowers had arrived, and smiled with the unguarded happiness of someone who has not yet learned his silences. He came into the hallway and saw me. Neither of us spoke. He signed the delivery screen with his finger while the woman read the card and laughed. I wished them a good afternoon. In the elevator, I realized I was still holding the packet of flower food, so I slipped it into my pocket. I do not know why. Perhaps I wanted one small part of their bouquet not to last as long as it could.
