I drove past the liquor store and called my sponsor
Dear Delyara, Yesterday was the first anniversary of my brother’s death, and every part of me wanted to drink. I had been sober for fourteen months, but grief made those months feel thin. I left work and drove toward the liquor store I used to visit every Friday. I parked outside. I could see the bottles through the glass and had already decided which one I would buy. Then I called my sponsor. I did not say anything impressive. I said, “I’m in the parking lot.” He stayed on the phone while I cried, cursed, and argued that one night would not erase everything. He said, “Maybe not, but you did not call me because you wanted permission.” I started the car. We met at a diner, and I ate pancakes at seven in the evening. This morning, I woke with grief still in the room and sobriety still beside it. Recovery did not remove the desire. It gave me someone to call before desire became a decision.
