My Diary

I drove to work in silence because I had no more language left

Dear Delyara, I work in an office, and this morning I turned the radio off halfway through the drive because even music felt like one more thing entering me. I had already had one child crying about school, one argument over shoes, one half-hearted apology from my husband after a sharp comment, and one glance at the bank balance before 8 a.m. By the time I got in the car, I could feel that I had no softness left for input. So I drove in silence. Not peaceful silence. Not mindful silence. The silence of someone who has already been spoken at too much and needs thirty minutes where nothing else enters the body through sound. I arrived looking fine. I even said good morning in a normal voice. But inside, I felt like someone whose nerves had already worked a full shift before the actual workday began.
