I earned my diploma in a language I learned at thirty

Dear Delyara, I arrived in Sweden as a refugee at thirty years old with two children and no university records because the originals were destroyed. I first learned enough Swedish to buy groceries, then enough to speak with teachers, then enough to apply for an adult-education program. Academic language felt like climbing stairs while carrying my entire previous life. I failed mathematics twice and nearly left the course when my daughter became ill. My classmates organized notes for me, and a counselor helped arrange childcare and extra tutoring. Today, at thirty-eight, I received my upper-secondary diploma. My son, now twelve, corrected the pronunciation of my name when the announcer said it wrong. The room laughed gently, and the announcer tried again. I walked across the stage hearing my full name spoken correctly in the country where I once could not understand a bus timetable. The diploma will allow me to apply for nursing school. I do not know whether I will be accepted. Today, possibility itself is enough.
