I feel essential to the running of this house and still strangely unnecessary in its softer emotional life

Dear Delyara, If I disappeared for three days, the practical consequences would be immediate. The forms, the meals, the remembering, the timing, the anticipation of what each person is likely to need before they know it themselves. I know what I hold. The house would know too. And yet, emotionally, I often feel like what I offer is so tied to function that softness only comes toward me in emergencies. Care arrives when I’m near collapse, not as ordinary companionship. That hurts. Not because I want to be adored. Because I want to be met while still upright. I want tenderness before crisis. I want the woman who keeps things moving to also be someone whose inner life matters even when she isn’t visibly failing. I think a lot of mothers and wives live in this gap without ever fully naming it.
