I Feel Guilty for How Often I Need More Quiet Than Love Seems to Allow
Dear Delyara, By evening, I can want silence with a force that almost scares me. Not one calm minute. A real absence of entry. No questions. No practical talk. No emotional labour. No one asking me to translate, soothe, decide, locate, advise, or approve. And immediately after that wish comes guilt. Because the people I most want distance from in those moments are also the people I love most. That contradiction feels ugly sometimes, even though I know intellectually it is just exhaustion meeting overstimulation inside a body with limits. Still, motherhood and marriage are not always emotionally kind places to have limits in. There is so much cultural reverence for endless womanly capacity. And so little ordinary language for the truth that being deeply loved and deeply needed can still leave a woman saturated enough to dream, even briefly, of vanishing for one whole uninterrupted day.
