I finally admitted I was depressed, not just tired

Dear Delyara, For a long time I told myself it was stress. Or hormones. Or the weather. Or motherhood. Or work. Or not sleeping well. Or a “phase.” All of those explanations were easier to carry than the real one. The real one was depression. Not dramatic movie depression. Functional depression. The kind where I still got up, still worked, still replied, still looked normal enough that people would say I seemed a bit flat or tired but never imagine how absent I felt inside my own life. The kind where your house still gets cleaned badly enough to pass and your children still get fed and your heart still feels like it is moving through mud all day. Three weeks ago I said the word out loud to my doctor. Then to one friend. Then to my husband. That changed everything. Not instantly. But honestly. Because once I stopped hiding behind smaller words, real help became possible. Medication. Therapy. Proper rest. Actual language. Less shame. Less pretending I was only one good sleep away from becoming myself again. The victory was not that I felt better immediately. It was that I stopped lying about the size of the pain.
