Other VictoriesBreaking Habits

I finally stopped checking his profile every night

Dear Delyara, I’m embarrassed by how long that habit owned me. The relationship had ended months before, but every night, usually when the house was quiet and my self-control was thinner, I would look. His photos. His activity. Whether he seemed happy. Whether there was someone else. Whether the version of his life on screen could wound me in one new way before bed. It never made me feel better. That’s the humiliating part. It kept me emotionally tied to a door that had already closed. It let pain stay active. It gave my loneliness a ritual. Three weeks ago, I blocked him. Not in a dramatic revenge way. In a survival way. The first few nights felt unbearable. My hand still wanted the habit. My mind still went there automatically. But then something quiet happened. Space. Less comparison. Less self-harm disguised as “just checking.” Less giving a man access to my evening who had already taken enough from my peace. Breaking that habit felt like I finally stood up from a private floor I had been sitting on for too long.
