I finally stopped drinking every night to numb the day

Dear Delyara, I am not writing this as someone who had a glamorous rock-bottom moment. Mine was quieter. A glass of wine had become two. Two had become the little private reward I told myself I deserved for surviving the day. It wasn’t chaos from the outside. I still functioned. I still worked. I still packed lunches and paid bills and looked like a normal tired adult. But I knew what I was doing. I was using alcohol to create distance between me and myself every evening. To blur the resentment, the loneliness, the fatigue, the mental noise, the sense of being too emotionally full by nighttime. I wasn’t drinking for pleasure anymore. I was drinking for disappearance. Three months ago I stopped. The first two weeks were awful. Evenings felt longer. My own thoughts felt louder. I had to sit with feelings I had been softly sedating for months. But then something changed. I started sleeping better. I started hearing my own life more honestly. I started noticing which problems were actually alcohol problems and which ones were still real underneath it. The victory is not that I became perfect. It is that I stopped numbing myself in a way that was making me less alive while pretending to help me cope.
