I finally threw away the box of things I kept to prove I had once been loved
Dear Delyara, Old cards. Receipts. A cinema ticket. A hotel keycard. A note. A birthday ribbon. One stupid spoon from a weekend away. Little objects that had no practical value and far too much emotional authority. I told myself for years I was keeping memories. The truth is, I was keeping proof. Proof that I had once mattered enough to be chosen. Proof that something had once been real. Proof that the person I missed had not been invented by loneliness after the fact. Yesterday I opened the box and realised I no longer needed evidence to support a courtroom that had already closed. So I threw it away. Not angrily. Not in a dramatic cleansing ritual. Quietly. With a strange tenderness for the version of me who needed those objects for so long. The victory was not that I stopped caring. It was that I stopped needing objects to hold the worth I now know I carry without them.
