I finished my degree after my daughter started school before me

Dear Delyara, I left university when I became pregnant at nineteen. I always planned to return “next year.” My daughter started primary school, then secondary school, then university herself. At forty-three, I finally enrolled in evening classes. We studied at the same kitchen table sometimes, two generations complaining about deadlines. I failed one statistics module and considered quitting. My daughter tutored me, badly and impatiently. Today, I graduated. She sat in the audience wearing the dress I bought for her own graduation two years ago. After the ceremony, she said, “Now you can stop using me as your personal calculator.” I laughed until I cried. Education success was not proving motherhood delayed my life unfairly or that I should have chosen differently. It was accepting that a goal can wait twenty-four years and still recognize you when you return.
