I finished the house my father drew but never built

Dear Delyara, My father was a builder who spent years drawing a small house he wanted to retire in. He died before buying the land. I found the plans after his funeral: pencil sketches, measurements, notes like window here for morning light. Ten years later, after saving and adjusting the design to modern standards, my wife and I built a version of it on a small plot outside the city. Today, we received the final completion certificate. I stood in the kitchen where Dad had written “big table” on the original drawing. There is one. My children were arguing around it while we opened cheap champagne. I do not pretend this is my father’s house. He never lived here, never chose the tiles, never complained about the cost. It is ours. That matters. Goals reached after grief are sometimes healthiest when they are allowed to change ownership. I used his drawing as a beginning, not a shrine. Tonight, morning light is coming through exactly the window he marked in pencil.
