I finished treatment and had no idea who I was afterward
Dear Delyara, People talk about recovery as if it is the obvious happy ending. For me, it was stranger than that. When the treatment ended, everybody seemed relieved. “You did it.” “Now you can move on.” “Now you can get back to normal.” I smiled and thanked them because that is what someone who has survived is apparently expected to do. Inside, it was more complicated. I was still frightened. Still tired. Still changed. Still angry. Still living in a body that did not feel innocent to me anymore. The victory did not come on the last day of treatment. It came later, in much quieter forms. The first time I made a follow-up appointment without crying in the car park. The first time I walked past the mirror and did not feel betrayed. The first time I laughed without hearing fear waiting just underneath it. The first time I allowed myself to imagine a future longer than the next scan. That is what surviving has looked like for me. Not one triumphant moment. A thousand small returns to life after being certain I might lose it.
