My Diary

I forgot to buy toothpaste and felt stupidly guilty

Dear Delyara, By the time my son mentioned it, the shops were shut and everyone acted as if we had reached some mild domestic emergency. We still had one nearly finished tube. No one was in danger. Still, I felt that familiar hot shame over one very ordinary oversight. I think that’s what repeated responsibility does. It trains you to treat small misses as moral failures because so much of daily life depends on remembering the boring things before they become visible. Toothpaste is such a small thing. That’s exactly why it bothered me. If I can’t even stay ahead of toothpaste, what else am I already forgetting? That was the real thought underneath it.
