My Diary

I forgot to defrost dinner and hated myself for an hour

Dear Delyara, By five-thirty I opened the freezer and saw the chicken still hard, and my whole body reacted as if I had failed some larger test than feeding my family. I could feel the irritation rise immediately, not only because I’d have to change the plan, but because my mind interpreted it so quickly as proof that I am dropping things. We had something else in the end. It was fine. The children ate. No one made it worse. But I carried that private disgust with myself far too long. That is what tired women do, I think. We turn one forgotten practical step into a character flaw and then keep moving while bleeding from it quietly.
