My Diary

I forgot what day it was and felt betrayed by the calendar

Dear Delyara, I kept thinking it was Thursday. It was only Wednesday. That kind of mistake is so small and yet so emotionally loaded when you’re tired. For one brief stupid moment I had felt closer to the weekend, closer to relief, closer to the end of the current sequence of school runs and dinner and work and forms and ordinary noise. Then reality corrected me, and I felt genuinely disappointed in a way that had nothing to do with time itself and everything to do with how much I needed a point ahead of me to lean toward. I think that’s what exhaustion does. It makes the future feel medicinal. When I realised it was only Wednesday, I stood in the kitchen with a packet of pasta in my hand and thought, you still have to get through another whole day before the day you thought you were already in.
