My Diary

I found a biscuit in my handbag and felt strangely emotional about it

Dear Delyara, It was crushed at the bottom near my receipts and lip balm, probably put there in a hurry two days ago when I was packing snacks for everyone else. I almost threw it away without thinking, but then I just stood there holding it and felt this ridiculous wave of sadness. I think it was because it looked like evidence of the kind of life I’m living — always preparing, carrying, remembering, sorting, making sure someone will not be hungry later, even if that someone is me and I only remember myself halfway through the process. The biscuit wasn’t important. What it represented was. There are so many small things women carry that never become part of the official story of the day. The emergency snack, the spare tissue, the note for school, the tablet for a headache, the charger, the quiet awareness of what everyone might need before they need it. Some days I don’t mind that role. Some days I feel made of it. Today I felt made of it.
