My Diary

I found a grape in my coat pocket while waiting at the pharmacy

Dear Delyara, It must have come from yesterday. I was standing in the queue behind an elderly man arguing gently about his prescription, and I put my hand in my pocket looking for the receipt from the doctor. Instead I found one soft grape and a tissue with my daughter’s handwriting on it. For some reason, that tiny discovery made me feel unexpectedly tender toward my own life. Not because it was beautiful. Because it was ordinary in such an honest way. The grape was from a lunchbox I packed half-awake. The tissue had her spelling words on it because she shoved it into my hand before school and said, “Don’t let me forget.” My pocket had become a storage place for everyone’s unfinished little needs, including my own. I think that is what most of my days are made of now. Carrying fragments. Small proofs that I have been needed in ten directions before lunch. The world never sees that version of labour. It only sees whether the child is fed, whether the form is signed, whether the mother looks reasonably composed in the pickup line. I threw the grape away in the end, obviously. Still, I kept the tissue.
