I Found a Library Book Under My Bed
Dear Delyara, I had gone into the bedroom to find my charger and saw the corner of the book peeking out from under the bed, dusty and slightly bent. My child had said two days ago that it was “definitely not in the house,” and I had believed them because mothers are often too tired to investigate every confident lie that childhood throws into a hallway. I pulled it out and just sat there for a second holding it. That moment felt bigger than the book itself. Not because it was dramatic. Because it captured something so ordinary and so relentless about family life — the endless private retrieval of things that would otherwise become tomorrow’s problem. The way women spend their lives preventing avoidable disasters that no one else ever fully sees because the disaster never gets the chance to happen. I put the book by the front door. I did not announce that I had found it. I didn’t have the energy for the full conversation. Sometimes motherhood is not confrontation. It’s silent recovery.
