My Diary

I found a packet of raisins in my coat pocket at work and felt suddenly maternal

Dear Delyara, Not because I was holding a child. Because I was holding evidence. The raisins had been shoved there by my daughter yesterday, “just in case,” then forgotten by both of us. I pulled them out while searching for my ID badge and had that strange little heart-pinch that comes when motherhood leaks into unexpected places. Office pockets. Handbags. Car seats. Receipts. Hair ties. Forgotten snack wrappers. I put the raisins on my desk and looked at them through half a meeting. Such a small thing, but I think I needed that reminder that I belong to more than emails and fluorescent lighting and whatever professional face I was wearing that hour.
