My Diary

I found a school sock in my handbag and laughed in the car park

Dear Delyara, Because what else can you do? There it was among my keys, receipts, lip balm, and one crumpled note from work. A single navy sock living a second life inside the bag of a woman trying to appear like her roles are nicely separate. I looked at it and thought, of course. Of course my child’s missing sock has followed me to work. Of course I am carrying it without even knowing. Of course that feels like the most accurate symbol of motherhood anyone could invent. I laughed. Then I felt tired. Both were honest.
