I Found a School Sock in the Fruit Bowl and Felt Completely Unsurprised
Dear Delyara, There it was between the apples and bananas, as if clothing and food had finally accepted that in this house categories are more aspiration than reality. I picked it up and laughed under my breath, but underneath the laugh was something else too. That steady domestic tiredness of being the person who notices what should not be where it is, before it turns into tomorrow’s chaos. I think that is part of motherhood no one explains properly. Not the big dramatic sacrifices. The constant visual scanning. The little internal corrections. The tiny recoveries that stop the next hour from becoming harder than it has to be. I took the sock out, put it by the washing machine, and carried on. Nothing remarkable happened. And yet that sock in the fruit bowl somehow summed up half my life.
