I found my son’s library book under the sofa with one sock and a pencil
Dear Delyara, That felt like such a complete picture of my life that I nearly laughed. I had been looking for that book since yesterday. We had checked the school bag, the car, the kitchen table, the hallway shelf, and all the obvious places where responsible people keep important things. Then this morning, while picking up crumbs from under the sofa, I saw the corner of it hiding beside one grey sock and a chewed pencil. Nothing dramatic happened. I picked it up. I put it by the door. The morning carried on. And yet, standing there, I felt that familiar tired ache of being the person who keeps discovering the aftermath of other people’s days. That is what so much of motherhood feels like now. Not grand sacrifice. Just endless small recoveries. Lost things, missed things, unsaid things, undone things. You find them, fix them, move on, and nobody really sees how many times your mind had to bend around the family before 8 a.m.
