My Diary
I found my son’s maths sheet in the bread bin
Dear Delyara, I was throwing away the crusts from breakfast when I saw the corner of folded paper under the bag liner. It was his homework sheet, slightly crumpled, untouched, and somehow already carrying the shape of the argument I knew we would have later. I stood there looking at it longer than I needed to. Not because of the paper itself. Because motherhood so often feels like discovering the evidence of other people’s unfinished lives after they have already moved on to the next room. The hidden worksheet. The unsigned letter. The damp towel. The untouched fruit. The half-truth in a child’s face. I pulled it out, smoothed it on the counter, and felt that familiar mix of love and tiredness settle in me again.
