My Diary

I found my son’s note in my coat pocket at work

Dear Delyara, It only said, “Good luck Mum.” Three words. Messy handwriting. A tiny folded square of paper I had not even known he had put there. I found it in the staff toilet while looking for my pass, and for one second the whole day changed shape. I had been moving through work in that careful professional way that hides how much life you’re carrying underneath. Then suddenly there in my coat was this small secret piece of love, travelling with me without making any noise until I was tired enough to need it. I nearly cried. Not because the note was grand. Because I was more worn than I had admitted to myself and his small kindness reached me exactly there.
