My Diary

I found the lunchbox still in the school bag

Dear Delyara, I knew before I opened it. That smell hit me through the zip. Warm fruit, old bread, something damp, something slightly sour, the exact smell of a child finishing a school day and forgetting that their mother is not magic. I pulled the box out and just stood at the sink for a second holding it like it had insulted me personally. The truth is, it wasn’t the lunchbox. It was the feeling. One more thing left to me. One more small job waiting quietly for my hands. One more reminder that so much of family life is me touching what everyone else leaves behind and making it clean enough to start again tomorrow. I washed it out, scraped the corners, left it upside down on the rack, and felt older than I had that morning.
