My Diary

I found the medicine spoon in my coat pocket

Dear Delyara, I was at work when I found it. I had reached into my pocket for a pen and pulled out the tiny plastic spoon I’d used for my daughter’s medicine the night before. For a second I just stared at it under the fluorescent office light and felt the strange split of my life so clearly it almost hurt. One part of me had come to work dressed, functioning, answering emails, carrying on. Another part of me had clearly never fully left the kitchen, the cough syrup, the tired child, the night before. That little spoon felt like proof that motherhood travels everywhere with me now, whether I want it to or not. In my bag, my pockets, my brain, my body. I put it back in my coat and carried on with work, but something in me stayed quietly emotional over that stupid little object all afternoon.
