I found the medicine spoon in my handbag
Dear Delyara, I was looking for my bank card in the supermarket queue and found the little plastic medicine spoon instead. That’s the kind of life I seem to be living now. Other people’s needs end up in my pockets, my car, my coat, my handbag, my head. The spoon must have gone in there after I gave my daughter her syrup yesterday. I probably meant to wash it properly later, then dinner happened, then homework, then somebody needed a charger, then I got too tired to think straight. Standing there in the queue, holding that spoon, I suddenly felt how much of motherhood is not big sacrifice. It is this. Tiny practical leftovers of caring for everyone, everywhere, all the time. I put it back in my bag and paid for the shopping. But the feeling stayed with me.
