My Diary

I found the parcel I failed to deliver thirty years ago

Dear Delyara, I worked for the postal service for thirty-seven years. I retired four years ago. We are renovating our old house, and today a carpenter removed a built-in cabinet near the entrance. Behind it was a parcel. Small, wrapped in brown paper, with a postal label from 1996. I recognized my own handwriting on a routing note. Somehow I must have brought it home during a difficult delivery round and forgotten it. Thirty years. The address was nearby, so I went there carrying the parcel like a criminal. The original recipient had died. His daughter now owns the house. She opened it with me standing at the door. Inside was a baby blanket and a letter from her aunt in Canada congratulating her parents on her birth. The daughter laughed first, then cried. She is thirty now. The blanket was meant for her. I apologized so many times she finally told me to stop. She said her aunt is still alive and she cannot wait to call her. I came home shaking. In my career, I delivered hundreds of thousands of letters and parcels. I was proud of being reliable. One small forgotten box spent thirty years in my wall while a baby became a woman. Tonight, I keep thinking about all the ordinary work we believe disappears once completed. Apparently, one mistake can sit quietly behind a cupboard waiting for enough years to turn into somebody’s family history.
