I Found the PE Kit in the Boot of the Car and Felt Both Brilliant and Tired
Dear Delyara, We checked the hallway, under the stairs, behind the washing basket, in the wrong child’s room, and even in the kitchen because family life has reached a stage where almost anything can end up almost anywhere. This morning, just when I was about to give up and accept that school would become one more place where I had to sound calm while feeling guilty, I found it in the boot of the car. Mud on the side. Socks still rolled inside. Forgotten, of course, because I was the one who had brought it in from the last club and then not fully brought it in. I should have felt relieved. I did. I also felt exhausted by how many tiny recoveries my life now depends on. That’s the thing no one claps for. Not big maternal sacrifices. Little rescues. Little preventions. Little searches that stop the day from becoming harder than it already wants to be. I carried the PE kit into the house like it was both victory and accusation. That felt about right.
