I gave the dog away before my husband came home
Dear Delyara, My husband was deployed overseas when our dog began destroying the house from anxiety. He scratched doors, tore furniture, and barked through the night. I was pregnant, exhausted, and afraid the landlord would evict me. Without telling my husband, I surrendered the dog to a shelter. I said he had bitten someone because I thought that would make them take him immediately. The shelter euthanized him three days later. I learned afterward. My husband came home two months later and asked where the dog was before he asked to see the nursery. I told him there had been an accident. He believed me for seven years. Last week, during an argument, I told the truth. He has not spoken to me since. That dog slept beside him through the worst years of his life. I did not only give him away; I lied in a way that helped end his life and then let my husband grieve the wrong story. I was overwhelmed. I needed help. None of those facts change the form where I checked the box saying the dog was dangerous.
