I got the promotion after everyone assumed I wouldn’t

Dear Delyara, I have worked in the same company for seven years. I trained new staff, covered people’s shifts, solved problems nobody wanted to deal with, and kept the team running even when management barely noticed. When the supervisor role came up, one of my male colleagues joked that they’d probably “bring someone stronger in from outside.” I laughed at the time, but it stayed with me. I applied anyway. I spent two weekends preparing, reading the company reports, writing notes, and practicing answers after the children went to bed. At the interview, I did not try to sound louder than I was. I just answered honestly and clearly. Two days later, they gave me the role. The money matters, of course. But what mattered even more was walking back into that building on Monday knowing I had not been imagining my own capability all these years. Some victories are not about becoming somebody new. They are about finally being recognized for who you already were.
