I got through the family dinner without using a drink to disappear from myself
Dear Delyara, Family dinners can still be hard for me. Old roles. Old tensions. Old versions of myself trying to wake up in the wrong tones. I used to soften evenings like that with alcohol. Not to become wild. To become blurred enough to bear them more easily. That felt normal for a long time. This week, I stayed sober. Which meant I felt more. The awkwardness. The old irritation. The sadness. The emotional weight of certain comments. The tiredness. All of it. I didn’t get to dissolve the evening into fog and then call that coping. I drove home clear. That mattered. Recovery, I’m learning, is often not a dramatic rescue scene. Sometimes it is simply remaining present in a difficult room and not abandoning yourself to get through it faster.
