I grew tomatoes on the balcony after losing the farm

Dear Delyara, Our family farm was sold after debt made continuing impossible. I had spent forty years growing things on hundreds of acres. Moving into an apartment nearly broke me. My daughter brought me two tomato plants for the balcony. I told her there was no point. She planted them anyway. I watered them mostly to keep her from asking. Today, I picked the first ripe tomato. One tomato. I held it in my palm longer than necessary. It smelled like hot leaves and soil, exactly like August mornings on the farm. I sliced it for lunch with salt. It was not the best tomato I have ever grown. That almost helped. Nature did not give me the farm back. It gave me one small living thing that responded when I watered it and turned toward the sun without knowing anything about banks, auctions, acreage, or failure.
