I handed my wages to nobody for the first time in recovery

Dear Delyara, During gambling addiction, my wages disappeared within hours. In early recovery, my sister managed my money because I could not trust myself. Every payday, income went into an account she controlled and she transferred enough for expenses. It saved me, but after two years, I began feeling frightened of financial independence. My counselor said recovery eventually had to include responsibility, not permanent avoidance. We created limits, alerts, blocked gambling transactions, and weekly reviews. Three months ago, my wages began entering an account I manage myself. Today was payday number four. The money is still there after bills, savings, and groceries. I did not transfer it to my sister for protection. I did not gamble. I also did not spend the entire day congratulating myself for resisting. I worked, made dinner, and forgot about the balance for several hours. Sobriety is becoming less about somebody standing between me and destruction and more about building enough structure that I can stand there myself.
