I hate how fast money can change the version of me my family gets

Dear Delyara, A bill lands, a cost goes up, one thing breaks at the wrong time, and suddenly I am less patient, less easy, less available for nonsense. I don’t want that to be true. It is. Financial strain doesn’t only affect budgeting. It affects tenderness. It gets into the tone of the kitchen, the flexibility of the evening, the amount of emotional generosity I can still spare by bedtime. I think that is one of the cruelest parts of it — money stress can make you feel morally different inside your own home. I worry about that more than I say. Not only what it costs. What it changes.
