I hate how much my family can feel the shape of my financial fear even when I try to hide it

Dear Delyara, Children are clever with mood. They may not understand debt, bills, rising costs, direct debits, school expenses, or why one month feels different from another, but they feel tone. Delay. Tightness. The way a mother answers more carefully when money is on her mind. The way she says maybe later with a face that means something heavier than timing. That’s what hurts me. Not only that money is hard. That it enters motherhood like this. Through restraint, through calculation, through the effort of trying not to pass anxiety down through ordinary family moments. Every request becomes two conversations at once — the one out loud, and the one inside me doing numbers and fearing consequences. I am tired of needing that second conversation at all.
