I hate how quickly money makes me feel like a bad adult
Dear Delyara, A number on a screen should be a fact. For me, it becomes a judgment almost immediately. It doesn’t stay practical for long. It turns into a feeling about my competence, my safety, my future, my intelligence, my worth, and whether I am somehow permanently behind in a way more organized people are not. I know that isn’t rational. That doesn’t stop it. Last night I was doing the monthly calculations and all it took was one expected expense being slightly higher than I’d hoped for the whole room to change shape emotionally. It was no longer a budgeting problem. It became that old familiar internal accusation: you should have sorted your life out better by now. I am tired of how much morality gets attached to money in me. I’m tired of what it steals from softness. I’m tired of how a bill can reach all the way into my dignity before I’ve even paid it.
