I have been sleeping in my office for three months
Dear Delyara, My coworkers think I arrive early. The truth is, I never leave. After my rent increased, I lost my apartment and began sleeping on the sofa in my private office after everyone went home. I keep clothes in a locked filing cabinet, shower at the gym, and leave the building at six each morning so the security guard sees me arrive again at seven. I am a senior manager earning a salary that would sound comfortable to most people, but debt, child support, and medical bills have consumed it. Shame has made asking for help feel more impossible than hiding inside the workplace. Last night, a cleaner opened the door while I was sleeping. She saw the blanket, the toothbrush, everything. She closed the door quietly and has not mentioned it. Today, she left a fresh towel on my chair. Her kindness frightened me because now another person knows how close my professional life is to collapse. I conduct meetings ten feet from where I sleep and use words like growth, stability, and planning as though none of them are jokes.
