The PlotFear of Failure

I HAVEN’T TOLD ANYONE I FAILED THE BAR EXAM

Dear Delyara, My family thinks the results come out next week. They came out yesterday. I failed. My parents own a small grocery store. My mother kept the acceptance letter from law school taped above the register for three years. Customers I have never met ask her, “How is our lawyer?” Our lawyer. I have been the family plan since I was seventeen. Tonight, my father called and said he wants to close the store early on results day so everyone can celebrate together. My aunt ordered a cake with a little judge’s gavel on it. I said that sounded nice. I have studied the score report until the numbers stopped looking like numbers. I missed passing by eleven points. Eleven points have made me afraid to answer my mother’s calls. It is not only that I failed an exam. I am terrified that the moment I tell them, every sacrifice they made will change meaning.
