My Diary

I Heard My Child Laugh Upstairs and It Lightened Something in Me Without Asking Permission

Dear Delyara, I was wiping the worktop when it happened. A real laugh. Not the polite one. Not the distracted one. The full ridiculous laugh that bursts out of a child when they are still, for one second, completely inside joy and have forgotten to be guarded. I stopped wiping and just listened. I think parenting older children makes laughter more precious because you hear less of it in the open. So much of their inner life becomes private. Their embarrassment. Their hurt. Their friendships. Their stress. Their changing selves. All of it moves behind doors. So when joy escapes into the hallway, you take it. I didn’t call out. I didn’t interrupt it. I just stood there with the cloth in my hand and let the sound do its work on me. By the time I started wiping again, something in me was lighter. That’s the thing about children. Sometimes they save a tired adult’s evening without ever knowing they did.
